This warm cheerful home was the perfect answer to all of our needs and worries during the stressful time following mom’s stroke. Ana and her wonderful team of caregivers are just amazing and everything we could have wished for. The immaculately maintained home (mom had her own room and bath) and home cooked meals were apparent on every visit. Every time we popped in for a visit mom was showered, dressed and well cared for. We were always welcome to come by at any time, and warmly welcomed by the staff. The same staff for nearly the entire time my mother lived there! It was a trying time for us as my mother had survived a stroke and spent two weeks at John Muir Hospital, after Stanford, in learning to walk and get around again. Following her stroke and rehab at John Muir Hospital, which is well known for rehabilitating stroke patients, my family spent days researching where to take my mom thereafter. We looked at many facilities. Some were horrible due to the stench, some looked fantastic through our eyes. The large ones were very impressive to us, from our perspective. A fancy one with a great façade was looking promising and I was ready with my brother to sign the contract. At that point, Juliane from CareQuest asked me to wait and to look into Moraga Retreat too. This was one of the best decisions we made, looking at it from the perspective of what it meant to my mom and her life. Moraga Retreat was much smaller – a farm style home with a central living room and dining area - so less confusing than being in a larger residence of 50 plus residents. The care coverage was one staff per each three residents which is great care coverage compared to the larger ones. Mom lived at Moraga Retreat for over 3 years and was treated with respect, kindness, and excellent care. It was a blessing having Ana and Moraga Retreat for my mother’s final years, when she needed a lot of assistance. Let me start by saying that my profession had me working with caregivers for ten years, supporting them through the rehabilitation of their loved ones with brain injuries. I, too, was a caregiver for a loved one with two severe brain injuries. As he aged, dementia, secondary to the injuries, set in. So no easy case to manage. To state it politely... I had been caring for him for over two decades but it was time for him to be placed where his needs could be better addressed as he was about to be wheelchair-bound. A year living in a conventional, assisted living facility was a disaster (the place eventually went out of business), which was similar to the experience my mother had about a decade earlier in another facility. I worked with David Cohen of Exceptional Senior Placements (ESP) to find Moraga Retreat on Woodford Drive, in Moraga. We had finally found a *real home* for my loved one! It was a struggle for my loved one as he wanted his independence and wanted to go back to his home. Both things were not possible because of the damage to his brain and his increasing fragility. This is what Moraga Retreat owner Ana Blaj and her dedicated staff were tasked with overcoming, in addition to dealing with all of the medical and physical challenges he presented. Ana and her staff patiently and painstakingly softened his resistance, worked diligently to enhance his comfort in every way he asked and needed, and addressed his food preferences. It was heroic! No exaggeration. My loved one liked living there, knew he was cared for as well as possible and bonded with Ana, Donna, Wayne and the other caregivers like family. It was mutual affection, more than I ever thought possible. Oh sure, I was in the middle of things too much thinking I knew better about his care. Ana is an expert, certified care manager and she is locked down on the details and managing the staff and the home. It turned out no one knew better what to do for my loved one than *they did.* Period. After so much time devoted to my loved one's care, *I* could finally stand down and let people I trusted take care of him. What a relief for both of us. Moraga Retreat gave both of us our lives back. There are no words to thank them for five years of unwavering service as much as they deserve. I strongly suggest if you need help caring for your loved one, make an appointment to visit Ana and the staff at Moraga Retreat. I don't know what I would have done if I'd never met her. First of all, the house is well maintained with lovely soft colors and a beautifully landscaped yard. Helen had her own room and bath and her own closet and TV set. Her meals with the other guests of the house were healthy and varied. The cooking in the kitchen was always delicious. I often sat with Helen when she had lunch or dinner and the table always had a decorative center piece, perhaps celebrating a current holiday or the season of the year. Helen's clothes and hair were always clean and neat. Her caregivers were so friendly, helpful, patient with everyone who lives there. We were so satisfied with Helen's care and we never worried about her during the time she was living at Moraga Retreat. You, also can feel that your loved one is in good and caring hands.
